Most often harmless, a birthmark is a bump, spot, or discoloration on or under the skin present when a baby is born. It’s either a patch of skin containing too much melanin (pigmented birthmark) or a cluster of blood vessels that grow abnormally (vascular birthmark). Birthmarks can be various colors, shapes, and sizes.
What Causes a Birthmark?
The tissue in a birthmark is usually normal; it’s just positioned in a different place than it should be—a process that happens during fetal development. Therefore, the most likely cause is a defect in cellular migration. The cells multiply even though they have moved to different part of the skin or body. Birthmarks are seldom associated with rare serious disorders, but should be examined by a pediatrician anyway.
types of birthmarks
Most birthmarks are brown or black in color, although vascular birthmarks can be red, blue, or purple. Yellow, or flesh-colored marks may contain epidermal, lymphatic, or breast tissue.
Individuals with the following types may be candidates for birthmark removal.
Moles: A congenital mole or “beauty mark” is usually brown in color. Moles vary in size, shape, and color, but tend get larger with age, compared to other birthmarks. Some are raised while others are flat.
Café-au-lait Spots: These have a light-brown, coffee-like appearance, hence their name that translates to “coffee with milk” in French. Often oval-shaped, the spots can be of any size on the face, upper body, legs, or buttocks.
Mongolian Spots: More common in babies with darker skin, these gray-blue spots can be mistaken for bruises. They may or may not fade with age. The most common locations are the buttocks and lower back, where melanocytes become trapped in deeper layers of skin.
Hemangiomas: A surface lesion is called a strawberry hemangioma. Usually harmless, hemangiomas can also occur deep in the skin, where they’re more bluish-purple than red. Both are tangles of small blood vessels that tend to enlarge during the first year, and start to shrink thereafter, often becoming flat by age 10.
Salmon Patches: Capillaries under the skin cause light pink or red marks, often on the back of the neck, between the eyebrows, on the upper eyelid, or upper lip. They may look like bite marks or someone was kissed. A salmon patch may or may not fade away on its own.
Port Wine Stains: Facial marks the color of wine or grape juice. Usually flat and smooth, they can vary in size. The affected area can enlarge as a child grows, and salmon patches don’t go away without treatment.
Laser Birthmark Removal in Los Angeles
At LDI, our Los Angeles dermatologist can use revolutionary laser treatment, especially for pigmented birthmark removal.
Radio Frequency Laser Treatment:
Fractional lasers are best suited for treating brown spots. Radio frequency energy, such as that used by Forma, can be focused on deeper layers of skin to target sub-surface lesions.
A PiQo4 laser is effective at breaking up pigment under the skin using minimal heat, since acoustic energy is applied in picosecond pulses. It is effective for birthmarks and discolorations on the face, neck, back, chest, arms, and hands.

Went in today for a free consultation at the Covina location, got quoted and started the treatment for my acne and acne scarring the same day. So far i do not have any complaints. The staff were very friendly and the nurse explained everything in great detail...
Dr. Rispler came in and evaluated my face for the treatment that needed to be done for today, I did not find him rude at all. I like how the office gives out samples of the medications, topical creams and face washes instead of purchasing the full size and finding out later it did not react as well with your skin condition. Lastly, The laser and shots are not painful at all.. very tolerable, i am looking forward to my next appointment and great results. Thank you L.D.I.

I started seeing Dr. Rispler a year ago and at first, never believed in his surgery-free approach, but he definitely beat my expectations. He and his staff were very professional, and always listened to my questions. Dr. Rispler planned out the most specific treatment plans, which...
...treat my unique skin type, tone, and color. I am approaching my 50s, so those wrinkles are coming. Thankfully, I now have a dermatologist I can call for treatments without surgery.

A few months ago I had my FREE consultation at Laser and Dermatology Institute. I met with one of the consultants first and thought he is extremely knowledgeable & professional. After I met with the consultant I felt confident to start treatment that same day. Dr. Rispler...
...is one of the smartest dermatologist I’ve ever met. I asked tons of questions and he was very patient with me and answered every question I had. Dr. Rispler explained to me that it would take 6-8 treatments to laser off my facial hair permanently. After the consultation I was super exited to get started. I had my first laser hair removal treatment at the Covina office. A nurse named Teresa did my first treatment she was very gentle. She numbed my face and gave me some protective goggles for my eyes and she explained into detail what she was doing. She zapped my face with the laser a few times and I was done. OMG, I was so surprised that I was done with my first laser treatment so fast. The lasers felt like warm tiny stings on my face but it was virtually painless. I’m looking forward to my future laser treatments.. So far I’m extremely satisfied with Dr. Rispler and his staff. I highly recommend LDI to anyone.
