Acne can be frustrating and seemingly never-ending. Breakouts can occur at the worst times; you’ve planned a perfect outing with friends, but there it is. You may feel helpless, but the truth is you have control over the situation. Basic skin care helps but your options go beyond that. Here’s how you can keep your face from breaking out.

Stay Clean

A thorough face wash twice a day removes pore-clogging dirt and is perhaps the most effective acne treatment there is. Soap and warm water remove excess oil and dead skin cells, while specialty cleansers are available if your skin is especially oily or dry. Be sure to take off your makeup first. And don’t use a harsh soap that can further irritate inflamed skin, and stick to washing just twice a day.

Use Over-the Counter Products

Benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid are effective at killing bacteria on your skin. Sold in drug stores, these don’t require visit a dermatologist for a prescription. Your skin might become dry and start peeling but adjusting the amounts you use can control this. To help stop acne from forming in the first place, use a topical retinoid gel.

Eat a Skin-Friendly Diet

Consuming lots of sugar can trigger breakouts and research has found milk and diary products to contribute as well. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are good for your skin and body. Vitamins are important; vitamin B3 helps regulate skin acid and activates protective peptides. Calcium is good for your skin too. Also, drink a lot of water during the day; your body needs hydration.

Take Care in the Sun

Ultraviolet rays can inflame your skin. They can contribute to dark discolorations and acne; if you take acne medication, check for indications it may make your skin more light-sensitive. Protect yourself with long-sleeved shirts, pants, and brimmed hats. Other tips include avoiding the sun between 10 am and 2 pm, using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, and using a “noncomedogenic” sunscreen. The label will indicate if it is, meaning it can help prevent pimples.

Control Your Stress

High stress levels increase the amount of acid in your skin, which in turn triggers acne breakouts. Exercise, yoga, and mediation help neutralize the acid. A walk outside can also be beneficial. Also look for tangible solutions to whatever is stressing you out, so you feel less anxious, which is great overall and you can better enjoy your day.
