What can I expect from my laser hair removal procedure?

There’s really no better option for people looking to get rid of unwanted hair than laser treatments. Creams and ointments can be imprecise and require reapplication regularly which can be a hassle, and waxing can be extremely painful, as most realize. Laser hair removal is hands-down the most effective way of getting rid of hair in a way that is safe and painless.

In preparation, it is highly recommended that you refrain from tanning, either via the sun or in a tanning salon. Prior to your first laser session, you need to abstain from waxing or plucking for six weeks. Shaving is allowed. The day before your appointment, you should shave the area with a clean, new razor so the laser will be able to find the follicle.

So what can you anticipate from your procedure?

In short, it is simple, fast, and non-invasive. You may only feel a slight pinch during laser treatment. Essentially, the doctor will cause the laser beam to penetrate through your skin to the hair follicles where each strand of hair is “born”. The laser’s heat will damage the follicle, rendering it unable to grow hear. Treating the area desired, the upper lip for example, may take only a few minutes. You will need to return to the office again for further treatments towards your desired results, usually three to four treatments within a year.

Your recovery will most likely be short and pain-free. Some reddening and swelling of the skin in the affected area is common, and it may feel like a slight sunburn with mild sensitivity. This should lessen during the next 24 hours or so, but you can treat any discomfort with ice. Blistering may also result. Nothing that should keep you up at night, however.

The cost of the procedure can vary. It is best to consult with our office or come in for a consultation where you can be given an estimate of costs so you can decide if laser hair removal is right for you.

In the two weeks following your session, direct sun exposure should be avoided. If you must be outside, apply sunscreen with Zinc, and an SPF of 20 or higher.
